February means ... it's time to celebrate libraries!

It's almost February--which means it's almost National Library Lovers' Month, "A month-long celebration of school, public, and private libraries of all types." What better time to recognize libraries' value in our society as we work to support this critical community resource? Here are some ways you can celebrate while supporting libraries' mission:

Browse the shelves. Grab an enticing volume and peruse it in the peace of the reading room. Or explore your library's electronic offerings. Sign up for a class, or plan to attend an upcoming event. Take advantage of the resources for education, entertainment, and community involvement available at your local library.

Volunteer or donate. Limited budgets mean many libraries are short-handed--so there may be an opportunity to tutor, shelve books, help with programs, or provide some other needed service.

Keep current on the new titles available, especially for readers age K-12. One resource: book lists from the American Library Association, whose annual Youth Media Award winners will be announced at ALA Midwinter in Denver on Monday, February 12.
